Where Should I Live?

Best Places to Live for Families in the UK: A Data-Driven Guide

Choosing where to raise a family is one of the most consequential decisions most people make. The quality of local schools, the safety of the neighbourhood, access to green space and healthcare — these factors shape children's lives and parents' stress levels in ways that go far beyond the cost of the house itself.

This guide looks at the key factors that matter most to families, and highlights some of the best areas across the UK that score well on multiple dimensions. You can use our search tool to see school ratings, GP surgery access, crime rates, and house prices for any area near your workplace.

What Matters Most to Families

School Quality

Ofsted ratings are the most commonly cited school quality metric in England, with four grades: Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, and Inadequate. While Ofsted ratings aren't perfect — they tend to favour schools with stable cohorts and penalise those in more deprived areas regardless of the actual teaching quality — they provide a useful baseline for comparison.

When evaluating schools, consider:

Safety

Crime rates are an obvious concern for families with children. In practice, most crime in the UK is property crime (vehicle theft, burglary) rather than violent crime, and rates vary enormously between postcode areas. Our tool shows average monthly crimes per postcode area, allowing you to filter out areas above your comfort threshold.

For families, the specific crime type profile also matters. High anti-social behaviour figures in a city centre might be less concerning for a family than a slightly lower overall rate dominated by burglary.

Green Space and Outdoor Access

Growing up with access to parks, countryside, and outdoor space has well-documented benefits for children's development and wellbeing. Areas near national parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs), or simply with good local park provision tend to score highly with families.

Our tool flags runnable parks (2+ hectares) near each postcode area, giving you a quick signal for how much usable outdoor space is available.

Healthcare Access

GP surgery availability varies significantly across the UK. Some areas are severely under-served, with practices closed to new patients and long waits for appointments. Our tool shows GP surgery locations for each area, and the NHS website publishes patient satisfaction data and acceptance rates.
